I had seen the vinyl figures called Munny coming by on Instagram, and it's always a pleasure to see artists work their magic to transform Munny from this plain white figure into the most magical pieces of art. But of course it was now time to see for myself, and paint my own Munny figure.
From drawing to 3D art
But where to start? The choice was plain and simple. My first illustration of my series of Contemplations was the ultimate image to set up in 3D. I started drawing on the Munny. Just the basics, to see where all the linework would end up.
Painting a Munny figure
Next I started with my acrylics. I set up my 3D painting the same way I do with a flat piece of artwork: in layers. I like strong colors. The pink and the dark blue accents enhance each other, creating a strong image.
The finishing touches
When I'm happy with my colors, and it's time to add the finishing touches to my Munny, I start on my titanium white acrylic paint. I already glued some rhinestones on the eyes, to give them some extra character.
The final result is even better than I expected and hoped. The acrylic paint works well with the vinyl. There is no need to paint on thick layers. The vinyl is smooth, but has some structure so that the paint stays on well.
One finished, hopefully many to go...
I'm thinking about turning my other illustration called 'Masks' into a vinyl figure as well. I will also use polymer clay for that one. Apparently polymer clay also works well with vinyl. We shall see!
